Handler’s State of Mind

If you, the handler, are not in the right frame of mind you can cause the dog to have an altered sense of what is happening. This can inhibit the dog’s ability to think and learn because of watching and thinking about you instead of trying to concentrate upon what it is that you are trying to communicate.

Owners are often astonished at the responsiveness of their dog to an unfamiliar dog trainer. The truth is, a trainer comes into a situation with no baggage. The dog reads a completely open and comfortable person who has the ability to calmly communicate and handle your dog with great effectiveness.

It is all too often very easy to greatly impress dog owners with our skills and mastery of their dog but that is not what I live for. For me, seeing a dog owner perform what I have taught them is the highest achievement.

You need to have a playful, yet controlled attitude. If you are tense, upset, or angry you need to let the lesson wait for a more appropriate time to play this game. Usually, it’s the men I really have to impress this upon. Guys tend to get physical and if they are upset the dog may develop a fear of being near this man, or men in general.

How well would you learn if your teacher were potentially dangerous to be around? Dogs are very astute at reading moods and trying to teach when you are upset is counterproductive in my experience. Come back to it later. Go to a play area with the dog and let the dog go be a dog. Sometimes just watching dogs going about being dogs is surprisingly therapeutic.
